Laura Duerwald

ARTIST STATEMENT

My paintings are not actually painted but are constructed out of various materials -- paper, pigment, linen, wax – using a process of addition and subtraction. Powdered graphite is rubbed by hand into quickly torn or folded paper. The folds and tears provide a geometric foundation and a tactile sense of place that reference fluctuations of time, geology, and topography. Pattern and repetition are potent sources of meaning for me. They encourage slow meditative connections of mind and body, like an awareness of one’s breath. Their rhythms enable constantly shifting internal and external conditions to be embedded in my process and embodied in the work.
